Gisenyi, Rwanda, located on the shores of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a 5 hour drive from the capital city of Rwanda, Kigali. As the major site of border crossing between Rwanda and the DRC, Gisenyi is home to a wide range of individuals from government officials to those who cross the border daily to barter wares. Additionally, its location on Lake Kivu makes Gisenyi a vacation destination for much of Central Africa and Europe. A single public hospital provides healthcare to a population of over 86,000 people, and the nearest hospital is a 2 hour drive that is nearly impassable during the rainy season, healthcare resources in the region are overworked while meeting the needs of the population. Thus, Ndengera Clinic was established.

Ndengera Clinic was established to facilitate relief of the overloaded medical system in Gisenyi. Their mission is "To provide the qualiy of care; The education of population; The research; The motivation of the patients in the participation and the continuous improvement of the services to provide. The friendly care; A desire to avoid the fragmentation of care and to provide moral and psychological support to the patients; A collaborative capability that extends beyond the institution to other network partners." Located in a more remote part of Gisenyi, Ndengera serves all patients who enter its doors. They have partnerships with many of the major insurance providers in Rwanda and are always looking to facilitate and improve the care that they provide.
The David Lloyd Foundation became involved with Ndengera Clinic through the work of Dr. David Lloyd who worked as a physician at Ndengera Clinic in its early days. He so enjoyed providing care to the women and children who visited Ndengera Clinic for obstetrical, gynecologic, and pediatric care and formed close bonds with the people of Gisenyi in the process.
The David Lloyd Foundation, started in memory of Dr. David Lloyd, found working with Ndengera Clinic to be the perfect way to continue Dr. Lloyd's work and cement his legacy. Through our partnership, Ndengera Clinic and The David Lloyd Foundation have built the Dr. David Lloyd Memorial Wing of Ndengera Clinic thus expanding the clinic's capacity and adding surgical suites for cesarean sections and gynecologic procedures, a pharmacy for patients requiring hospitalization, hospital wards for patients requiring overnight stays, and private hospital rooms for new mothers and their babies. We have also enhanced ultrasound capabilities and partnered with Ndengera Clinic to purchase a digital X-ray machine, the only digital machine between Gisenyi and the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. We look forward to continue partnering with Ndengera Clinic in our combined mission of providing high-quality care to the people of Rwanda!
The Dr. David Lloyd Memorial Wing of Ndengera Clinic
As part of our involvement with Ndengera Clinic, The David Lloyd Foundation brought a Pediatric Advanced Life Support course to Gisenyi, Rwanda. Our team educated not only the staff at Ndengera Clinic, but also doctors and nurses from Gisenyi Hospital. During the 3-day course, Rwandan providers learned all of the concepts taught in traditional PALS courses, practiced skills like CPR and ventilation of infants and children, and ran through numerous patient simulations where they applied the concepts they learned to cases complete with simulated respiratory and cardiac monitoring! Through partnership with Gisenyi Hospital, all providers were able to earn continuing medical education credit for attending and participating in the course. We are excited to continue bringing educational opportunities to Rwanda!
